Sorrentino’s Stony Plain Garlic Fest

Last year, Sorrentino’s in Stony Plain planned to raise funds, through their annual Big Garlic Night, for the Light Up Your Life Society and, unfortunately this event was cancelled due to the pandemic.

Light Up Your Life Society has been selected, again this year, to be the recipient of the 2021 funds raised by raffle tickets sold on a child’s playhouse.  The structure is amazing with a slide, cupboards, upper deck, ability to hook up to a garden hose for running water in the sink plus many other great features.  Any child’s dream playhouse.  The prize includes the delivery of the playhouse within the Edmonton area.  During the month of April, tickets will be on sale for the playhouse valued at $8,000.

Tickets are $20 each or 3 for $50.  The draw will be held ‘live’ on Facebook, Sunday, May 2, 2021, at 3:00 p.m. Tickets will be available from any Light Up executive member, or by calling Linda at 780- 963- 5691.

The picture above will give you an idea of the structure.  If you would like a first-hand look, it is located next to Sorrentino’s in Stony Plain.

Thank you for your support of this raffle!

2020 Fundraising Campaign Results

It’s official! The Light Up Your Life Society raised $90,638 in our 2020 Campaign. Our goal was $60,000 which felt a little like wishful thinking during these unusual times. It is an undeniable testament to the generosity and loyalty of our supporters to realize that we could exceed that goal by over 50%. It is with the most sincere gratitude that we acknowledge your unwavering generosity in support of palliative, hospice and continuing care in the Tri-Community area. As a volunteer-run organization we are proud of the fact that 97% of all money raised is used to directly benefit those in need. And we are delighted to say that funds to support all current requests ($71,024) have already been disbursed. In 2022 we will celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the LUYL Society. Thank you ALL for partnering with us and supporting our efforts during all those years!

Christmas Wishes From Light Up Your Life

Happy Christmas Wishes from the Directors and members of the Light Up Your Life Society. Keep joy and hope in your heart … share love and kindness with everyone you meet, in particular those who are less fortunate, lonely or suffering a loss. Thank you to LUYL Director, Daphne LeGrow, for creating our beautiful annual Christmas decor planter at WVHC. We share immeasurable gratitude with all our supporters as we inch ever closer to our 2020 goal of $60,000.

2020 Campaign Update

A special appeal to our dedicated donors

The LUYL Society’s campaign goal for 2020 is $60,000.  Because of the difficulties and restrictions resulting from COVID-19 our campaign goal has been significantly reduced, and a number of our usual annual events (Silent Auction, Variety Show and Orient Luncheon) have been cancelled for this year only.  We are, however, proceeding with the annual campaign, and we thank you for helping us reach our goal to help support those in need in our own communities.

COVID-19 and Light Up Events

The current worldwide health crisis of COVID-19 is affecting all of us in so many ways, and is forcing all of us to do things differently.  As our loyal donors and followers know, we sponsor and engage in numerous events and fundraising activities with most taking place during the fall of each year.

We are sad to announce the cancellation for 2020 of three of our signature events:  our annual Spice Up Your Life Variety Show, our Silent Auction, and the Orient Family Restaurant Luncheon.  Our annual Raffle though is most certainly a go!  Tickets will be available from Light Up Your Life members beginning September 1, or by contacting Linda at 780-963-5691, if you wish to support us in that way.  And we will also continue our five annual Light Up events throughout the Tri-Municipal region.

Rest assured we are still working as hard as always to provide the items and services needed for palliative care in our communities.  Know that your donations are needed and appreciated more than ever!  You can continue to support our work by donating online or at one of our many donation box locations.  The 2020 Light Up Your Life campaign officially starts November 1 and our fundraising goal this year is $60,000.

Light Up Your Life honours health staff

The Light Up Your Life Society honoured the WestView Health Centre staff who serve and care for patients with a banner which was generously donated by wonderful LUYL friend and supporter, Tim Getzinger, owner of All Star Signs.

The Light Up Your Life Society installed a banner honouring WestView Health Centre staff on behalf of all those whom they care for and serve.

“Included in their message of gratitude are all the other essential service providers who continue to support WVHC, including delivery companies, suppliers, EMTs and pharmacies,” said Linda McCreath, Director of the Light Up Your Life Society in an email.

The society also donated electronics to help bridge the gap for families that can’t visit people in person.

“In an effort to help Continuing Care residents and hospice patients at WestView Health Centre keep in touch with family and friends during COVID-19 isolation, the Light Up Your Life Society purchased two iPads which will allow those in need to communicate with their loved ones,” McCreath noted.

Recreation therapist at WVHC Continuing Care, Michelle Svarich, said she is grateful for the gift and that she was excited to share this technology with those in her care.

About Hospice Palliative Care

May 4th to 10th, 2020 observes the twentieth annual Hospice Palliative Care Week. This year, the Canadian Hospice Palliative Care Association (CHPCA) addresses myths that circulate around Hospice Palliative Care in Canada.

Volunteer Luncheon January 2020

Your support is appreciated! Chair Sharon Cornelius expressed heartfelt gratitude to everyone who contributed to the successful 2019 Light Up Your Life fundraising campaign. An “Appreciation Luncheon” was hosted by the Good Samaritan facilities at George Hennig Place on Jan. 17th. All equipment requested by WestView Health Centre Continuing Care, Hospice & Home Living, and the three Good Samaritan Care Centres in Stony Plain & Spruce Grove, as well as the completion of the LUYL Hospice Garden were fully funded. The total cost of everything was $98,000. We could not accomplish this without the volunteers who assist us in so many ways, including, of course, the Directors and Members at Large of the LUYL Society. The Society has been volunteer-run since 1992 and to date has raised approx. $1.75 Million, with $250,000 funding to WVHC Hospice since it opened in July, 2014.

Thank you to the members of our communities who so generously donated in 2019, and have supported the LUYL Society for the past 28 years!
